Getting Started

Quickstart

From zero to a woven web of terminals and AI agents in two minutes.

Launch

kumo

kumo attaches to the last session if one exists (else starts fresh) and starts the daemon behind it if needed. Every new pane opens in the directory you launched from.

Meet the leader key

Press Ctrl+B, then a command key. The status bar shows the available bindings while you are in leader mode, and leader+? opens the full keybind showcase at any time.

Split panes

  • leader+v β€” split vertically
  • leader+- β€” split horizontally
  • leader+h/j/k/l β€” move focus between panes
  • leader+z β€” zoom the focused pane

Resize with leader+H/J/K/L, or just drag a splitter with the mouse.

Spawn an AI agent

leader+a opens a dedicated pane running your AI CLI (default opencode, configurable via ai-cmd). You can also just run opencode, claude, or codex inside any shell pane β€” kumo auto-detects the agent process and weaves it into the sidebar's AGENTS tab with a live status dot: 🟒 working, 🟠 blocked (waiting for your approval), βšͺ idle. When an agent blocks or finishes, kumo chimes so you notice without watching.

Install the Kumo skill

Give your agent Kumo's bundled orchestration instructions so it knows how to discover panes, read terminal output, prompt other agents, and wait without polling. Choose the AI CLI you use and run the generated command:

Install for Codex

Personal skill Β· available in every project Β· ~/.agents/skills/kumo/SKILL.md

kumo agent skill --output ~/.agents/skills/kumo/SKILL.md

You can also install it inside Kumo from MENU β†’ settings β†’ agents. Kumo detects whether each target is installed and lets you install, update, or remove it. See Configuration for details about paths and update detection.

Sessions

  • leader+c β€” create a named session
  • leader+n / leader+p β€” cycle sessions
  • leader+1…9 β€” jump to the session at that sidebar position

Give an agent an isolated worktree

Create an ephemeral checkout and start an agent in its new session:

kumo worktree create --ai fix-login --agent claude --note "Investigate auth tests"
kumo agent status
kumo agent wait -p 42 --until idle
kumo agent prompt -p 42 "Fix the failing auth tests" --wait idle

In 0.7.0, --agent starts the agent but does not submit a task automatically; the explicit agent prompt is required. Automatic task submission in the create flow is planned for 0.7.1. See Orchestration for checkpoints, --from, shared directories, and cleanup.

Orchestrate agents (and dev servers)

Every kumo command is an API an AI inside a pane can use β€” no SDK:

kumo agent wait -p 42 --until idle # server holds the socket, no polling
kumo agent prompt -p 42 "fix the test" --wait idle
kumo agent read -p 42 --source recent # daemon owns the buffer, alt-screen intact
kumo pane wait-output -p 12 --regex "Ready|passed|failed"

See Orchestration for the full ADE guide and command reference.

Detach and come back

leader+d detaches this terminal; the daemon keeps running in the background owning your panes and agents. Re-attach from any terminal:

kumo # attach to the daemon (starts it if needed)
kumo ls # list sessions (* = active)
